Love Me, Love My Layout

09/19/2002 - 11:45 a.m.

My pal Toothbrush has informed me that all these years I have been totally ferbixxled, and it is not "In love in love in love etc," but "Give love give love etc" that Freddie and Dave sing in "Under Pressure."

So I went and looked up the lyrics on the web.

And she's right.

Kinda changes the whole meaning of the song for me now.

I guess part of the problem is that I never actually paid that much attention to the lyrics - I always just heard 'em in the background, and kinda thought they were about interpersonal relationshipal pressure, like when you and yer significant squeeze are having a tough time. But no. It's more about how everybody has a tough time in life and we should all be nicer to each other. Or some kinda peace and luv schmuh like that.

Toothy is also quite adamant that 1280x1024 is just too dang high a resolution to use as a design point when laying out web pages. She's all peeved cuz I used absolute column sizes and such, instead of percentages. And you know, she just might be right about that. I was trying to get stuff for this diary journal thingy done quicklike, so I didn't really do all the design-y thinking and scutwork I should have. So, in the near future, I will probably do some design goofing, and you under-privileged-resolution folks won't have to do all that scrolling to the right to see my entries. Won't that be cool?

I didn't think so.

She also raises again the spectre of my links. Now, this is not the first time I have heard that links that open in new windows is a problem for some of you. I have two regular readers who are not shy about their opposition to this design element.

Toothy points out, quite rightly, that if you want to open a link in a new window, you can just hold down the shift key and click the link. (This is of course what you do on a Windows machine. I don't do much with Macs, so I can't say how it works there.)

Btchy just rants and tells me how much she hates it.

I like it, obviously, or I wouldn't do it. I even taught Peth how to do it, which probably peeved Btchy no end. And there are legitimate reasons to do it - especially if the target of the link does a javascript redirect, it can be tough to get back to the place you came from. This is very common at porn sites.

I've heard.

That it is.

Common, I mean.

At - you know - porn sites.

But, as I say at the top of my Comments page, here at MAOD, we're always listening - to you! So I'd like to hear what you have to say on the subject. So here's a poll.

Please vote in my poll, and I will listen very carefully to what you have to say. If I will read all the coments. And then I'll dow hatever I feel like, cuz this is my Diary, shazblazz it, and no one can make me do anything in it that I don't want to do!
Except Elvis.

He is, after all, the King.

In other news, Bertucci's, which is alleged to be an Italian restaurant, does not seem to know what linguine is, fer the luv of Elvis. At least, not based on what my coworker got in his takeout linguine dish last night. He got some weird flat noodle, with wavy edges, that neither of us had ever seen before. Odd. Very odd.

Probably should have gone to Olive Garden. At least there, they have hospitaliano.

Oh yes - extra-special super-secret thanks to the fellow who's been leaving me those effing snazz voice mails. You know who you are, and so do I, and all I have to say is, "Rock on, my brother!"

Music to think about love, linguine, and my layout by:
Reid Paley - "Lucky's Tune" (Revival)*
"Candy from a baby never tastes like it should
Now I'm thinking maybe I just don't know what's good
Ain't so much
Give me one chance I'll fuck it up!"

*That's right, this song is not on the album called Lucky's Tune. Go figger.

See what I did there? I went and moved my diaryring to a rings and reviews page!
