Revisiting Old Records

I'm listening to a record that I used to really like a lot - "Juju" by Soiuxsie and the Banshees. And you know what? It holds up pretty well. The songs that I didn't like then I still don't like, and the ones that I did still sound pretty good, especially the one-two punch of Halloween and Monitor that ended Side 1 back in the days when records had sides.
But manohmanischewitz, if I never have to hear an overwrought, pretentious lyric like "Gazing at you with scorpion eyes" ever again, I'll be a happy man.
Ok, I see that the imagistic quality of scorpion eyes is supposed to signify the strange animalistic quality of the spooky narrator character, but, "gazing?" What's wrong with "looking," or, if necessary, "staring?" "Gazing" just sounds like classic gothic thesauritis, which is a disease to be avoided at all costs, especially by goth touchstone bands like this one.
And how does one "wear my silence like a mask," and yet also "murmur like a ghost?"
