Scary Motorbike Communications (now with more!)

10/10/2003 - 1:37 p.m.

The last two days have been bee-yoo-tee-fool, warm fall days - temps in the 70s by 9 o'clock, clear skies, the works. I had to do errands both days that required the use of my autovoiture, and I cursed those errands, for they prevented me from riding my motorbike to work.

So today, although it was more like 60 degrees and overcast, I decided to ride my motorbike anyway. So, after taking the cats to the vet in the autovoiture, I went home and hopped on the bike.

The wind chill made me a bit cooler than I'd have liked, but I was enjoying the ride, out on the highway rolling along, when a woman in a silver Mercedes passed me, made eye contact, and then pointed behind me and down, as though she was trying to tell me there was something wrong with the rear end of my bike.

Now, if you've ever been on a motorbike, you know that a message like that is darn tootin' scary. Like, let's say for example that the bungie cord on my luggage rack had come loose, and was dangling down near the spokes of the rear wheel. If it suddenly got tangled in the spokes, I'd almost certainly be looking at a catastrophically sudden slowing of the bike, followed closely by what motor cycle enthusiasts rather euphemistically call a "high speed getoff" right onto my face. Although I wear a full face helmet and gloves and all that safety shmutz, I still don't hanker to go flying over the handlebars and come into hard painful contact with the road surface, especially with the bike rolling (or sliding) along behind me.

So of course I immediately got off the road - fortunately I was at an exit and could just chug right off and pull up on the little side street there to examine the situation. My mind was rolling over the possibilities - could be a bungie cord, could be the cable lock that I use to make it look like it's harder to steal the bike than it would really be, maybe I picked up a piece of road munge....

So I pulled up, turned off the bike, got off, and put it on it's stand. It's a little top heavy, so I always use the centerstand rather than the side stand, even though side stands are definitely cooler. Then I walked around the back of the bike and found -

nothing.

Not an effing thing.

The bungie cord was in place on the luggage rack. The cable lock was in place on the luggage rack. There wass no debris caught in the wheel or on the muffler or any fricking where else. My bootlaces hadn't come undone. There was nothing falling out of my pocket(s).

I have no motherdogging idea what the woman in the silver Mercedes was trying to tell me.

I assume she thought something was wrong, and was trying to help out, but, I dunno what she wanted me to know.

If you do, let me know, ok?

A friend of mine and I were talking about movies the other day, and he saw I have "They Saved Hitler's Brain" on dvd. He's a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, so he asked if it was worth watching.

I said, "It is a very fine example of deep hurting," which as an MST3K devotee, he understood completely.

I then said, "The experience of having seen TSH'sB is vastly superior to the experience of actually seeing TSH'sB."

He nodded slowly, then put the DVD down and started talking about Joy Division.

See what I did there? I went and moved my diaryring to a rings and reviews page!
